- What's a selkie?: Selkies are shapeshifters, moving between human and seal forms by removing or putting on their sealskin. They are featured in the mythologies of multiple cultures, but the Fishwife draws primarily from Irish folklore. Many of the legends around these beings involve the selkie's (typically a woman) sealskin being stolen by a human (typically a man), who then hides the skin so the selkie cannot transform into her seal form and is forced to marry her thief.
